Imagine this: you’re at a Lodge meeting, enjoying the usual camaraderie, when a new member is introduced. But this new “Brother” isn’t quite what you expected—no firm handshake, no need for a chair, and certainly no apron. Instead, he’s got a power button. Yes, we’re talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) potentially joining Freemasonry. Sounds a bit out there, doesn’t it?

Brother HAL 357: A New Kind of Member?

Let’s get our heads around this—could we see AI taking part in Lodge activities? Picture the Worshipful Master saying, “Brethren, please welcome Brother HAL 357,” and there’s this machine ready to participate. If you’ve ever seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, you might be thinking, “Isn’t that the computer that’s more likely to lock you out of your spaceship than pass the mustard?” The idea of a machine joining in our gatherings is a bit of a head-scratcher.

But really, could an AI understand what happens during a Lodge meeting? It might be able to process instructions, even run things smoothly, but it’s missing that essential human connection. An AI wouldn’t get the significance of the traditions, the importance of the roles we take on, or the value of the relationships we build.

AI as the Ultimate Ritual Assistant

Now, imagine this: you’re in the middle of a Lodge activity, and suddenly, you can’t quite remember the next step. Instead of relying on a fellow member for a nudge, you have an AI feeding you the information right on cue. Perfect timing, no mistakes, just a smooth flow of events. Sounds like a dream, right?

But let’s be honest—part of what makes these moments meaningful is the fact that they’re not always perfect. There’s a certain charm in the little errors, the shared smiles when someone fumbles a line. These moments remind us that we’re all learning together, growing as a group. If everything ran like clockwork, would it feel the same? Probably not.

AI as a 24/7 Mentor

Freemasonry is all about growth and learning, and traditionally, we’ve done that through mentorship and shared experiences. Now, picture an AI tutor, always available to answer your questions or explain a concept, day or night. You could be learning about our values and principles at any time that suits you, with instant, accurate responses.

It sounds convenient, but here’s the rub: AI can give you information, but it can’t share wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience, from hearing stories, from discussions that go beyond facts and figures. An AI might know a lot, but it can’t offer the depth of understanding that comes from years of being part of a community.

The AI Secretary: No More Missing Details

We all know the Lodge Secretary’s job isn’t easy—keeping everything organized, sending reminders, making sure things run smoothly. Now, imagine an AI in that role. No missed deadlines, no lost documents, every detail handled with precision. Sounds efficient, right?

But where’s the warmth in that? The little jokes when you forget something, the friendly reminders from someone who knows you well—those things matter. They’re part of what makes the Lodge feel like a community, not just an organization. An AI might be great at the technical side of things, but it wouldn’t bring the personal touch that we all value.

Can AI Truly Understand Freemasonry?

Here’s the big question: could AI ever really understand what Freemasonry is all about? Our meetings aren’t just about following a process—they’re about the bonds we form, the personal growth we experience, and the values we share. Could a machine ever appreciate these things?

AI can process information, perform tasks, even learn patterns. But Freemasonry is about more than just knowledge—it’s about understanding, empathy, and the human experience. These are things that a machine, no matter how advanced, simply can’t grasp.

A Helpful Tool, Not a Member

So, could AI join the Lodge? Probably not in the way we think of membership. But could it be a useful tool, something that helps us with the practical side of things? Maybe. Freemasonry has always been open to innovation, but we’ve also held onto what makes us unique—our shared experiences, our growth together, and the bonds we build.

AI might help with the nuts and bolts, but it can’t replace the heart of Freemasonry. After all, it’s the people, not the machines, that make our Lodge what it is. So, while Brother HAL 9000 might have some uses, he’s probably better off staying in the world of science fiction. And honestly, I think we’re all just fine with that.
