Brethren, as the cold grip of winter loosens and the world awakens with new life, we find ourselves standing at the threshold of Spring - a season rich in symbolism, especially for us as Freemasons. Spring is a time of renewal, growth, and enlightenment, much like the journey we take through the Craft.
From Darkness to Light: Just Like the Seasons
We often say that a man comes to Freemasonry “in darkness, and in need of light.” Winter, with its long nights and bleak landscapes, is much the same—a season of hardship and patience, where the world slumbers beneath frost and shadow. But, just as the candidate is brought to light in our ceremonies, Spring bursts forth with the promise of illumination. The days lengthen, the sun warms our temples (both metaphorical and literal), and we are reminded that no matter how dark the times, the light always returns.
Growth and the Working Tools of the Season
Spring is the season of labour - gardeners till the soil, farmers sow their crops, and, if we’re honest, many of us finally tackle those long-neglected DIY projects. (A bit like the Brother who finally opens his ritual book a week before the meeting, isn’t it?) Just as nature toils to bring forth new life, we as Masons are constantly working on our own self-improvement. We take up our symbolic working tools—the plumb, level, and square - and apply them not just to rough stone, but to our daily lives. Much like a gardener pruning a tree, we must cut away the vices and superfluities that hinder our progress. After all, what good is a well-prepared ashlar if it is covered in moss?
Renewal of Our Masonic Journey

Spring is also a reminder to shake off stagnation. How many of us have attended Lodge meetings on autopilot, forgetting the deeper meaning behind our words and actions? (Be honest, we all know that Brother who only wakes up when someone says, “All rise.”). The Vernal Equinox teaches us balance, a time when light and dark stand as equals - a fitting moment to renew our commitment to the Craft. Just as nature is reborn each year, so too should we take time to refresh our understanding of our obligations, our teachings, and our fraternity.
Brotherhood and the Festive Board: A Feast Worth Waiting For
Spring is also a time of gathering, of feasting and rejoicing—something we Masons know a thing or two about. With the return of warmer weather, we are no longer huddled around roaring fireplaces, but instead sharing meals with renewed energy, much like our ancient brethren gathering after long and weary winters. And let’s be honest, nothing quite lifts the spirit like seeing a Brother's face light up when the Junior Warden announces that dinner is served.
The Lesson of Spring: A Call to Action
Brethren, let us take inspiration from the season. Let us cast off the dormancy of winter, take up our tools, and build—not just in stone, but in wisdom and fraternity. Let us sow the seeds of knowledge, cultivate brotherly love, and tend to the gardens of our Lodges so that they may flourish for generations to come.
Spring is here, and with it comes the call to labour, to learn, and to live more fully as Masons. And remember, just like planting a garden, the work we put in now will bear fruit in time.
So, dust off that ritual book, sharpen your working tools, and step forward into the light. After all, a good Mason is like a well-kept garden - always growing, always flourishing, and always standing upright, true, and square.
Let there be Light!
